Abstract
The ecosystem of the Yaquijá river is part of the Taracena Cantón of the local council of Santo Domingo Suchitepéquez, it is located in the Subtropical Very Humid Forest (warm) -bmh-S(c) -, at a height of 260 meters above sea level, it is characterized for having a warm climate, with a minimum annual temperature of 18 °C and a maximum of 38 °C, an average annual rainfall of 1,901.2 mm, 291 habitants live in this ecosystem. The research was carried out with the objective of valuing the biodiversity and ecosystem services offered by the Yaquijá river to the inhabitants of the Taracena Cantón; the integral valuation method was used. The study area was 0.32 km2 . The information was obtained by measuring and field observations, interviews directed to the villagers, and was codified into three matrixes; a) of cultural type, b) of ecological type and c) of economic type, that allowed to identify and to value the biodiversity and the ecosystem services. The ecosystem of the Yaquijá river provides a total of 45 services, provided by the river and 91 species of flora and fauna, which make up 63 native and 28 exotic species. The services were classified into eight categories: timber, artisanal, family, medical, environmental, recreational, cultural and edible economy
