Abstract

SUMMARY The present investigation was carried out on the Las Margaritas farm located in San Francisco Zapotitlán, Suchitepéquez, which consisted of evaluating six densities of the predatory mite Amblyseius swirskii as a biological control for the thrips Sciothrips cardamomi in the cultivation of Elettaria cardamomum L. “cardamom”. At farm, one of the problems with cardamom cultivation is the low quality of the grain due to the damage caused by thrips, reporting a density of 187.8 thrips/m², which is why the decision was made to evaluate it as a cultivation method. biological control, different densities of the predatory mite A. swirskii. The response variables were the efficiency and effect of the mite on thrips; the thrips population densities that were reduced with the control and if there was influence of the climatic conditions for this control; In addition, an economic analysis was carried out determining which of the treatments is the most profitable and its benefit/cost ratio. For the research, two hectares of cardamom crops were used in production, located in the Jaboncillo sector, through a complete randomized block design with six treatments and four repetitions, with randomized experimental units of 400 m2, in which the treatments evaluated were: treatment T1 as an absolute control without release of A. swirskii; treatment T2 as a relative control where the dose was 31,250 individuals/ha (125 sachets/ha), density recommended by Koppert, the marketing brand of the biological product; the T3 treatment with a dose of 18,750 individuals/ha (75 sachets/ha); the T4 treatment with a dose of 25,000 individuals/ha (100 sachets/ha); treatment T5 with a dose of 37,500 individuals/ha (150 sachets/ha) and treatment T6 with a dose of 43,750 individuals/ha (175 sachets/ha). The results obtained for the response variables were that the dose of 43,750 individuals/ha (175 sachets/ha) (treatment 6) is the appropriate density for biological control of thrips in the cardamom crop, under Las Margaritas farm conditions. because this was the one that stood out in all the variables, such as, mite population density appropriate for thrips control; the degrees of damage in the capsule, with the highest percentage of good grain being 80%; in the climatic influence which decreased in thrips
