Abstract

Abstract The township of Colomba is part of the department of Quetzaltenango, being one of the largest municipalities with 212 square kilometers (km2 ). According to records from de munipal planning office, it has a population of 50,000 inhabitants and is organiced into five microrregions. It is a municipality predominantly of agricultural production, among the most abundant crops are coffee (Coffea arabica), macadamia (Macadamia integrifolia), cacao (Theabroma cacao) and rubber (Hevea brasilensis). In the southern part of microrregión I of Colomba Costa Cuca are the suburbs of Monte Real and San Francisco, In 2017 Upflow Anaerobic Sludge Blanket (UASB) were built,the treatment plants have a capacity for a inlet flow of 4.56 liters per second (L/s). The systems have pre-treatment processes, primary and secundary treatments. It is important to mention that when the treatment systems were installed, a technical study or a characterization of the wastewater was not carried out, ignoring the efficiency of the systems and the processes to be followed in compliance with environmental legislation. For the evaluation of wastewater management in the southern part of microregion I of the municipality of Colomba Costa Cuca, Quetzaltenango. Initially, the release points were identified, as well as the average release flow. Subsequently, the polluting load and efficiency of the systems were evaluated, which was interpreted based on compliance with Government Agreement No. 236-2006 Regulation of discharges and reuse of wastewater and Government Agreement No. 58-2019.
