Abstract
ABSTRACT The introduction of horticultural species from temperate to warm climates, such as the southern coast of Guatemala, has been a challenge, because to date no seeds of typical temperate vegetables, adapted to the warm climate, had been generated. Given this uncertainty of the production behavior of Brassica oleracea, Coliseu variety recommended for warm climate, it was evaluated under the conditions of the localities Guadalupe, Willy Woods and Japón Nacional B of Santo Domingo Suchitepéquez, located on the Pacific coast. For the evaluation of the production behavior of B. oleracea the objectives of the research were: a) to describe the biometrics and phenology, b) to quantify the inflorescence production, c) to evaluate the variables of temperature and relative humidity in the evaluated communities and d) to determine the costs for the production of inflorescences, it was carried out in a randomized complete block design. In the biometrics, the following variables were considered: plant height, number of leaves, leaf length and width, stem diameter, fresh leaf weight, days to the beginning of flowering and days to harvest of the varieties Coliseu (T1) and Avenger (T2), the species presented a phenology in four stages: Juvenile phase from 0-30 days after transplantation, floral induction phase at 40 DDT, inflorescence formation phase at 50 DDT and flowering and harvesting at 60 days after transplanting. Inflorescence production was obtained in the Willy Woods locality, the average yield of inflorescences of B. oleracea variety Coliseu was 0.90 kg/m2, the average diameter of inflorescence was 10.59 cm. Which meant that this cold-weather species normally produced in warm weather. The analysis of the temperature and relative humidity variables showed that in the Willy Woods locality 82% of daytime hours equivalent to 49.7 days in which the crop was with temperatures below 37°C, being these conditions that inflorescence production was observed in the Coliseu variety, while the variety of B. oleracea Avenger that is produced with temperatures of 18° to 24°C did not produce inflorescences in the conditions of the three localities evaluated.
