Abstract

Summary This research had as a general objective, to search, collect and characterize Phaseolus vulgaris “pole bean”, in the communities of Nuevo Bracitos, Monte Carlo and Mangles, in the lower part of Mazatenango, Suchitepéquez, information that would help the amount of native bean that exists among communities, as well as generating information for future genetic improvement and conservation programs. For the present study, exploratory tours were carried out in the three aforementioned communities, mainly obtaining information about which farmers grow pole beans in the communities, then each of them was visited in their respective plot, as well as obtaining the geographical coordinates of the same. Among the results obtained is having collected and characterized six native bean materials. Likewise, the preservation of the characterized materials through the establishment of a germplasm bank. It is worth mentioning that due to the characterization of bean varieties at the field level and through analysis of principal component information, the formation of three groups was obtained as a result. The first group is made up of two varieties with identification codes WP01 and WP03, materials that have similar characteristics such as days to germination, length of the main stem and days to harvest. The second group is made up of three varieties WP02, WP04 and WP05, the main characteristics that group these three materials are: stem color, number of nodes, stem length and pod color; The third group is the most isolated because it is a specific growth material (ground beans) and the precocity that this material presents, being one of the materials that is harvested after 85 days. It was recommended to expand the research to more communities to continue collecting native bean varieties that may exist within the communities.
