Abstract
SUMMARY The present research was conducted in the municipality of Santo Domingo Suchitepéquez, Suchitepéquez. The objective was to evaluate two vertical garden designs (box design and bucket design) and two forms of organic fertilization (solid vermicompost and liquid leachate) applied to three crops (chipilín, hierba mora, and bledo). A randomized block design with a bifactorial combinatorial arrangement and four replications was used. Two vertical garden designs (box design and bucket design) and two forms of organic fertilization (solid vermicompost and liquid leachate) were tested. The treatments included: T1 with the combination of box design using vermicompost substrate, T2 with the combination of box design using leachate substrate, T3 with buckets and vermicompost, T4 with buckets and leachate, T5 with conventional ground-level planting using vermicompost, and T6 with conventional ground-level planting using leachate. Three different species were used in this study: chipilín, hierba mora, and bledo, chosen for their high nutritional content. The evaluated variables were the fresh weight yield of each treatment in each crop, dry biomass, and cost analysis. For the chipilín crop, the combination of bucket design with vermicompost substrate maintained an average yield of 38,695 kg/ha, while the combination of box design with vermicompost substrate yielded 34,475 kg/ha. The hierba mora crop did not show significant differences in yield among treatments. bledo demonstrated that the combination of buckets with vermicompost substrate yielded 18,922.50 kg/ha, while boxes with vermicompost yielded 15,175.50 kg/ha. Overall, the substrate significantly influenced yield, with vermicompost providing the highest nutrient contribution to the studied crops. Gains were observed only in the chipilín crop due to the number of harvests. Vermicompost resulted in the highest fresh matter yields. Conventional ground-level gardens had lower establishment costs (Q50.00) but were less productive in box and bucket crops.
