Abstract

SUMMARY The present investigation of ethnobotanical characterization of medicinal plants was carried out in aldea "La Soledad", San Lorenzo, Suchitepéquez. Due to the lack of health coverage, the communities excluded by the State have found, as a palliative alternative, people who, based on ancestral knowledge transmitted orally, keep instruction on medicinal plants. These people are usually called healers, and some play the role of birth attendants and are called midwives. In the absence of public attention, these very important people assume responsibility for the health of forgotten communities. They generally become in trusted local leaders. Their empirical knowledge is vital for the maintenance of health. In the study that was carried out, information was obtained conducting a survey addressed to the people who are in charge of health or people recognized for their abilities; community members seek them out when facing health problems. As a result, specific information was obtained such as medicinal plants that they use, the orchards in which they are grown, the agronomic management that they give them and the way in which they are used according to the morbidity situation that needs to be addressed.
