Abstract

Abstract The total height of trees is an important variable for the sustainable management of forest resources, in this case, the mangrove ecosystem; however, the measurement of this variable in the field is relatively difficult and costly. The aim of the present research was to develop a diameter-height equation that allows accurate estimation of tree height based on the normalized diameter of the species Rhizophora mangle L., for use in the Permanent Forest Measurement Plots -PFMP-. To determinate the equation, the sample used was 46 trees, which were enough to observe the behavior of the natural variability curve of the total height of the individuals. The selection of the best model was based on the following criteria: coefficients of determination (R2 and R2adj), correlation coefficient (r), mean and standard error, root mean squared error (RMSE), Akaike information criterion (AIC) and a paired samples ttest for the comparison of real height and estimated height; also, a graphical and numerical analysis of the residuals was carried out. The relationship between diameter and height was highly close in five proposed models (Coefficient r = 0.9081), presenting a coefficient of determination close to 1 (R2 = 0.8246 and R2adj = 0.8206). However, the natural logarithmic model was selected as the most appropriate to predict with better accuracy, the total height of the trees as a function of the normalized diameter, since it presented a standard error and a lower AIC compared to the other models, which indicates that it is accurate and less complex. This type of equation is useful and reliable for use in the different Permanent Forest Measurement Plots -PFMP- of the country, during the respective monitoring; since it reduces time, cost and also minimizes field errors
