Abstract

Abstract The following investigation was carried out with the objective of evaluating the water quality of the two supply systems in cantón Taracena, Santo Domingo Suchitepéquez, Suchitepéquez. To achieve this, five water samples were collected, two from the piped water service and three from artisan wells; a census was carried out to determine the number of users, verify the health of the people and evaluate the quality of each system, surveys were applied to members of Community Development Council (CODECO) and the sanitation inspector of the health center, the main factors were identified according to the use of the soil that influence the quality of the water and the quality of the water obtained was related to the morbidity of the town. The results obtained show that both supply systems comply with the parameters established in the Guatemala Technical Rules COGUANOR NTG 29001, being suitable for human consumption at the time of sampling; eight factors that affect water quality were also identified based on the definition of land use grouped in an assessment scale. By virtue of them, it is concluded that the quality of the water consumed by the inhabitants at the time of sampling cannot be related to the gastrointestinal diseases suffered, which implies that these can be caused by other reasons, such as: not using good hygiene practices, poor environmental sanitation of the place, improper handling and incorrect storage of water prior to consume. Finally, an operation and evaluation of the water for consumption in cantón Taracena manual is proposed, this document contains the necessary guidelines for the correct handling and storage of water within homes, as well as good personal hygiene practices, in order for the local population to consume water free of contaminants that can generate diseases that affect their health.
