Abstract
Abstract The Brisas del Mar and Esteros de Acapán farms are located in the township of Champerico, department of Retalhuleu, and cover 309.44 hectares (ha) and 223.85 ha, respectively, at 12 meters above sea level (m s.n.m). According to Fondo de Tierras, the first farm has 90 families registered as owners and the second farm has 55 families. Restoration for energy purposes on these farms covers 12.23 ha in Brisas del Mar and 3.45 ha in Esteros de Acapán, with timber species such as cedar and matilisguate and energy species such as aripín, madrecacao, melina, and eucalyptus, with a total of 11,018 trees in Brisas del Mar and 3,296 trees in Esteros de Acapán. The objective of the service was to characterize the experiences in restoration for energy purposes in both study sites. Four fundamental aspects were taken into account: the current conditions of tree composition, soil composition and water capacity in restored areas, as well as the cost-benefit calculation for both projects. A participatory methodology was used, conducting interviews and surveys directed to the population, as well as sampling of the restorations and soil analysis in both sites. For the cost calculation, information was gathered from the entities involved and the inhabitants of both communities, in order to make a projection of the benefits that the restoration could provide through the commercialization of forest products and the economic income through the forestry incentives granted by the National Forest Institute -INAB- through the PROBOSQUE law. The information obtained was used to create a history of the plantations, which contains data on each area from its establishment until July 2023. During this period, problems were identified in the development of the plantations, such as climatic, logistical, resource management, training and planning challenges, among others. In terms of tree composition, the Brisas del Mar farm has 900 trees/ha and Esteros de Acapán has 955 trees/ha, which is favorable for accessing PROBOSQUE forestry incentives.
