Abstract
Abstract This reseach paper presents the first characterization of the agroforestry systems established in the department of Suchitepéquez, which was carried out during the period from May to August 2021 in the areas monitored and registered in the different forestry programs provided by the National Forest Institute INAB, to the general population. The intentional method was used in order to select the community of interest. Fifteen farms located in nine (9) municipalities in the department of Suchitepéquez were characterized. In each of the productive units, two (2) plots of 1000 square meters (m2) of area and a radius of 17.84 meters (m) each were sampled. Data such as diameter at breast height (DBH), total height, canopy cover, which served to visualize the vertical structure of the agroforestry systems, were also evaluated in the field through vegetative profiles. The information collected was used to obtain the importance value index and the Shannon-Wienner index. The purpose of the study was to determine the tree richness of the agroforestry systems (AFS) characterized. Of the fifteen (15) active agroforestry systems in the department of Suchitepéquez, three (3) were established with Theobroma cacao (cacao) and twelve with Coffea arabica (coffee). In some agroforestry systems, the producers are implementing a change of use in order to conserve the tree associations. Thirty plots were sampled and with the data obtained in the field, vegetative profiles were drawn up. The tree species with the highest index of importance value were: Tabebuia donnell-smithii with 18.22%, which means that this species is profitable, easy to grow and has a higher timber yield. Twenty-nine forest species were identified, with the majority of species being predominantly timber species such as: volador (Terminalia oblonga), melina (Gmelina arborea), palo blanco (Tabebuia donnell-smithii), mahogany (Swietenia macrophylia), cedar (Cedrela odorata).
