Abstract

SUMMARY The present investigation addressed the problem in which the students of the basic cycle of the institutes by cooperative, find economic limitations, because it is one of the main factors that affect their academic performance since it is involved within this factor the mental and emotional health of the student to be able to perform academically. It was a study that took as analysis cases the educational establishments by Cooperativa de Mazatenango. It was based on the hypothesis that affirmed The economic factor is the main cause of the low academic performance of the students, leading to school dropout and dropout. The study was attended by an intentional sample of students from the institutes by cooperative of Mazatenango Suchitepéquez, who were studied through the psychometric tests of attitude and aptitude resilience. And they were also surveyed and interviewed. It was established that the majority of students with an unfavorable academic performance are all those who come from households with low economic status. According to the psychometric tests, it was found that most students have a high demotivation rate and low self-esteem. Therefore, their psychological, emotional and cognitive development is deficient. The investigation concludes that the economic factor affects the student's learning process, because they have to work to contribute financially to their home, leading to absences, dropping out of the institute or dropping out of the school year. Academic performance is affected by the economic factor because, due to poverty, these young people do not have the essential inputs to perform tasks, consult books and content according to their needs.
