Abstract

Abstract Totonicapán is located in the western highlands of the Republic of Guatemala and covers an area of 328 square kilometers (km2), distributed in more than 52 population centers that are part of its jurisdiction. In this geographical region, the research was carried out in order to characterize the physical properties of the waste and solid waste of the township of Totonicapán. This study is in full compliance with environmental legislation and serves as a tool to promote the comprehensive management of waste and solid waste. To do this, a stratified random sampling was used with three strata, representatives of the generation of waste and solid waste in the municipality. The first included 375 homes in the study area, the second stratum covered all businesses and the third, the municipal market. Sample collection was carried out for one week for each stratum. The samples are then transported to the work site for sorting, weighing and analysis. As a result, it is estimated that in the municipality of Totonicapán, per capita production is equivalent to 1.04 kilograms of waste and solid waste per inhabitant per day, which indicates that in the municipality 176,068 kilograms of waste and solid waste are produced per inhabitant per day, of which 50% corresponds to organic waste, 35% to non-recyclable waste and 15% to recyclable waste. Faced with this situation, a plan for the comprehensive management of waste and solid waste was proposed, which will allow the municipality to follow a work agenda focused on the collection, transportation, final disposal, treatment and use of waste and solid waste in the municipality of Totonicapán. viii
