Abstract

Abstract To contribute to the sustainability of the water resource, wastewater must be treated before being discharged into a receiving body, as established in the Regulation for the Discharge and Reuse of Wastewater and Sludge Disposal, Governmental Agreement 236-2006. Likewise, discharges must be in compliance with the parameters established by Governmental Agreement 285-2022, which is the current amendment to the regulation. Treatment plants are systems used to manage wastewater; their purpose is to eliminate pollutants to be integrated into a body of water without altering ecosystems. In the Cerrito canton of the municipality of San Lorenzo, Suchitepéquez, there are two ordinary wastewater treatment plants that operate with an anaerobic biological process. They treat part of the wastewater generated by three residential sectors: the urban area, canton Las Flores 2 and canton Cerrito. The public sewer system is divided into three branches, two of which enter the treatment plants through the curtain of the release box and the third is discharged directly into a stream called El Zanjón by the inhabitants. According to the information provided by the technician from the Municipal Water and Sanitation Office (OMAS), since the wastewater treatment plants were installed, no evaluations or previous analyses have been carried out, so the efficiency of their operation was unknown. For the development of the research, objectives were established to identify the discharge points, evaluate the efficiency of the treatment based on the reduction of the Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD) and develop a proposal to improve the management of wastewater discharged in Cerrito.
