Abstract

SUMMARY This investigation had as an objective to evaluate the adaptation of four species of grass under the effect of the reduction of light and foot traffic, including the species St. Augustine (Stenotaphrum Secundatum.) Such investigation was done in the educacional farm and productive “Zahorí” located in the municipality of Cuyotenango, Suchitepéquez. The factors evaluated were: sunlight exposure (100% and 50%) two levels of foot traffic (with or without foot traffic) and four species of grass (Stenotaphrum Secundatum, Axonopus Compressus, Paspalum Notatum and Stenotaphrum Secundatum Variegatum.) and lastly, to establish which species of grass is more rentable. In the implementation of grass dedicated to ornamentation in the department of Suchitepéquez, the species St. Augustine has been exclusively utilized in conditions of full sunlight, shade and foot traffic, bringing as a result that this species does not adapt to same, affecting its development and limiting the coverture causing a negative effect over its principal function, embellishment and ornamentation. The results indicated that the grass Axonopus Compressus is adaptable to areas where the intensity of sunlight is reduced 50% or less. In areas where the intensity of the sunlight is 100% its growth is more accelerated than the other species (90 days to cover an area of one square meter.) Also, it is the species that has a lower cost to establish Q10.02 quetzals for each square meter. The species Paspalum Notatum tolerated more foot traffic because only 43% of the total area was affected. Referring to the species Axonopus Compressus only 51% of the total area was affected by the foot traffic. The species Stenotaphrum Secundatum and Stenotaphrum Secundatum Variegatum were affected by the foot traffic in an area larger than 85%.
