Abstract

SUMMARY The following work is reported the review “characterization agro morphological and evaluation of performance with three cultivars of malanga (Colocasia esculenta, Schott), on Barrios village, Nuevo San Carlos, Retalhuleu. We used the experimental design completely random blocks, with thee treatments or cultivars. (T1: Cultivar from village Barrios, Nuevo San Carlos, Retalhuleu, T2: Cultivar from property Buena Vista, ANACAFE, T3: coming state Las Marías, Colomba, Quetzaltenango), and seven repetitions. The three cultivars of C. esculenta was characterized following the steps that, for this species, signal the list of descriptors published for the International Plant Genetic Resources Institute, IPGRI (1999), described in the section of annexes. For all quantitative descriptors (metric characteristics), was registered the average of five measures per accession. Most of the habit-related observations of the plant and leaf, were carried out at maximum stages of vegetative growth (about 90-120 days after sowing). The underground vegetative organs such as the bulb and the root, the observations were performed in fully mature plants (about 240-270 days after sowing). Checking the foliar morphological characters, the descriptors such as the color of the petioles, the color and the distribution of pigmentation at the point of insertion limbo-peciolo seen from the bundle of leaves, color of the veins on the underside of the leaves and, taking into account the underground vegetative selection of characters, pulp color, yolk color and root color, among others, it was determined that there are no agro morphological differences in the evaluated cultivars of C. esculenta, therefore they belong to the same species. For the performance evaluation, the production data were taken in kilograms per hectare, Kilograms of C. esculenta obtained in each net plot was determined by means of a balance of hanging, individually weighing the harvested corms. When performing the analysis of variance, it was verified that there was a highly significant difference between the treatments evaluated, it produces a different performance from the others. Determine which of the cultivars of C. esculenta produced statistically the best ix performance, we performed a Tukey averages test one percent of significance, defining that treatments one and two produced the best with an average of 36,563.8 and 35,286.7 kilograms per hectare, respectively. At the end of the investigation, it was concluded that, according to the performance and profitability parameters, the farmers must reproduce the cultivar of C. esculenta from village Barrios, Nuevo San Carlos, Retalhuleu.
