Abstract

Abstract Cantón Chitá was established on the banks of the sub-basin of the Chitá river, on January 7th, 1986, due to its geographic and climatic location, the population lives at risk of floods and overflows, especially during the rainy seasons. It shows that in 2017 the Chitá river overflowed, damaging the population surrounding the river and the bridge that leads to the center of Cantón Chitá. Based on the above, the present investigation was carried out with the objective of characterizing morphometrically the sub-basin of the Chitá river, calculating the linear, surface and relief aspects. To carry out the morphometric characterization of the sub-basin, cartographic sheets were used at a scale of 1: 50,000 from San Lorenzo (1859-II), Chicacao (1959-IV) from the department of Suchitepéquez, Retalhuleu (1859-I) and Santa Catarina Ixtahuacán (1960 III), from the department of Sololá. Likewise, the biophysical conditions of Cantón Chitá were described and a plan of activities was proposed to help reduce the damages caused by overflows and floods. Among the determined biophysical conditions of the Chitá Cantón, it is located in the subtropical (warm) Very Humid Forest life zone, -bmh- S (c) -, the terrain relief is 5%, classified as a gentle slope (p2), is at 334 meters above sea level, with an average temperature of 26 ° C and an annual rainfall of 2,969 mm per year, the length of the Chitá river that serves as the boundary between the Chitá and Cocales canton is 789.62 m. The sub-basin of the Chitá river begins at Finca Altamira at 2,040 meters above sea level and ends at San Lorenzo, Suchitepéquez; At 80 meters above sea level it has an area of 42.73 km2, it is characterized by being a very elongated sub-basin with a 0.04 form factor, well drained and with a rapid decrease in surface runoff. It is formed by a main channel of 33.95 km and a slope of the channel of 5.78%, 58 currents with an average length of 1.63 km. The proposed plan contains activities aimed at reducing the risk of floods and overflows on the banks of the sub-basin of the Chitá river, among them are;
