Abstract

The present investigation was carried out in the establishments of the middle level of the Municipality of San Francisco Zapotitlán of the Department of Suchitepéquez, studying the factors of academic performance in the Areas of Natural Sciences. The research process was developed in two stages. The first one that consisted of data collection through the application of surveys, interviews and participant observation during the development of Practice II of the Teaching Staff of Secondary Education in Pedagogy specialized in Educational Administration, which were subjected to analysis and interpretation during the second stage, completed within the development of the Graduation Work course, with curricular adaptation, of the tenth cycle of the Bachelor's Degree in Pedagogy specialized in Educational Administration. Among the factors that determine the academic performance of students in Natural Sciences, the didactic means that must be applied in this matter during the development of face-to-face classes stand out. According to the data collected during the research, they are not used in their entirety, because the area is taught with lectures, reading of texts and group exhibitions of students. Experiment or demonstration techniques are not used for learning the content. Year after year, the teaching of the area of natural sciences is repetitive, which encourages students to reuse work from colleagues from previous promotions to fulfill their learning tasks, fosters their little interest in learning the content and, on the other hand, denotes little interest in teachers for updating and diversifying their method. Student accommodation and lack of interest in carrying out activities for their intellectual growth and training in the natural sciences are factors that cause poor academic performance in this area
