Abstract
ABSTRACT In the Guatemalan educational field, the area of Mathematics is considered fundamental for the learning of students. Therefore, this research addresses the causes that originate the low performance in students of the basic cycle of the National Institute of Basic Education -INEB-, in the municipality of Santo Tomás La Unión, department of Suchitepéquez. Therefore, as a result of this problem, the need arose to know the origins that cause this situation. In order to establish the causes of poor performance in mathematics, the first thing that was carried out was a theoretical study of the subject and then apply surveys to students and teachers, as well as an interview with the director. The student survey was classified into five categories: socioeconomic status, study habits, level of family participation in student learning, perception of leisure activities, and teacher's class methodology. On the other hand, the survey for teachers and principal highlighted whether they plan classes, whether social networks are considered to influence student performance and the impact of the pandemic on teaching. The methodology used had a quantitative approach with a descriptive design, since it included the elaboration and application of surveys to a sample of 125 students of first, second and third grade of the basic cycle. Likewise, a survey ballot was applied to teachers who teach the mathematics course, in the same way an interview was conducted with the director of the educational establishment. Finally, with the data and information collected, various problems were detected, so we proceeded to determine the range of influence they exert on the low performance of students in the area of mathematics.
