Abstract

Abstract The municipality of Santa Lucía Utatlán is located in the department of Sololá and consists of 53 communities, including rural areas, cantons, hamlets, and the urban center, covering an area of 44 square kilometers. It has a total population of 21,885, with 95.56% of the population speaking the K'ich'e language. The research was conducted with the aim of identifying potential tourism sites within the municipality. The information related to the cultural heritage and current tourism of the municipality was obtained through visits to tourist destinations, the application of surveys, and interviews with community leaders and owners. The site assessment was carried out taking into account the scenic, natural, cultural, and development potential aspects. Fifteen potential tourism sites were identified in the municipality, located in five of its communities. The most valuable one, according to its characteristics, is the site called Nantural, which is located in the southeast of the municipality, offers services for all audiences, is striking for its infusion beverages, and the scenic beauty where Lake Atitlán is contemplated. It has camping areas and social activities, from where the San Pedro volcano, located in the municipality of San Pedro La Laguna, and the surrounding villages can be observed. Two other important sites are: Mirador Ixchel and the Scenic Route, they share the view towards Lake Atitlán. According to the information obtained, all the sites have particular and common characteristics. This provides a variety of tourist destinations for visitors to choose from. According
