Abstract

Abstract La Reina community is located in the village of El Rodeo in Escuintla. It has 555 houses of which 182 are inhabited, and a population of 1053 inhabitants. It was founded in conjunction with the communities: Santa Rosa and El Rodeo (central town), in 1918 by a small group of people, which increased after the eruption of the Volcano of Fire in 1931, which forced the population of San José Las Lajas to move to El Rodeo. Its economic support activities based on the labor force of agriculture, mainly in the cultivation of cane and coffee. Initially, a process of socio-environmental diagnosis was developed in La Reina community, which allowed prioritizing the main environmental problems within the community. The most serious problem corresponded to the inadequate management of recyclable and non-recyclable waste, giving rise to the research topic entitled: "Management of recyclable and non-recyclable waste generated in the community of La Reina, village El Rodeo, Escuintla", with the objective of evaluating the current management of solid waste and household waste in the community. For the development of the research, a sample of 82 families was used, determined by the simple random sampling method. The survey allowed to determine relevant aspects on the management of recyclable and non-recyclable waste generated in the community, including: the lack of a garbage collection service and the availability of the population for the acquisition of it. For the calculation of the environmental indicators, the selective collection method was used; applying the equations of the Manual of Municipal Environmental Indicators, of the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources. It was determined that the per capita production of La Reina community is 0.0848 kg / inhab / day, the density of the organic waste is 190.67 kg / m3, 236.33 kg / m3 for the recoverable inorganic and 451.67 kg / m3 for the inorganic not recoverable. Of the total recyclable and non-recyclable waste generated, 48% is organic, 26% is recoverable inorganic and the other 26% is non-recoverable. It was also determined that currently 0.00049% (15.22m2) of the community area is being used for unauthorized dumps. Based on the results obtained, three proposals were developed for the management of waste and solid waste; a) the installation of a Bocashi type abonera at community level, for the use of organic waste; b) the elaboration and socialization of a manual for the integral management of recyclable and non- recyclable solid waste and; c) the implementation of a garbage collection service.
