Abstract

ABSTRACT The proposal for the technical closure of the sanitary landfill located on the premises of the Recreational Institute for Private Sector Workers of Guatemala (IRTRA) arises due to the site having reached 90% of its waste reception capacity. This plan outlines a set of specific actions aimed at ensuring a safe and controlled closure of the final waste disposal site. The main objective is to minimize environmental impacts and safeguard public health following the cessation of operations. The proposed measures include: • Landscaping of the area, with the planting of species such as ginger, lemon, almond trees, and soursop to contribute to land rehabilitation. • Monitoring of wastewater, originating from the sorting area at the treatment plant, composting chambers, and the landfill itself. Biannual characterizations will be conducted to ensure that parameters remain within the limits established in Governmental Agreement 236-2006. • Noise, control due to the use of heavy machinery during the scheduled landfill closure process, through periodic measurements to ensure sound levels do not exceed 70 decibels. • Gas monitoring, to evaluate and manage gases that may be generated by the compacted inorganic waste at the time of landfill closure. Additionally, the potential environmental, economic, and social impacts associated with these activities were identified, as well as the changes that may arise in the surrounding environment during the implementation of the plan. These considerations will be key to ensuring an efficient technical closure of the sanitary landfill.
