Abstract

Abstract The Madre Vieja River basin is located on the southwestern Pacific slope of Guatemala and encompasses the departments of Sololá, Chimaltenango, Suchitepéquez, and Escuintla. In its lowland areas lies the municipality of Patulul in the department of Suchitepéquez, as well as the municipalities of Tiquisate and Nueva Concepción in the department of Escuintla. In 2016, the lower basin was the focus of interventions following the establishment of a Technical Roundtable composed of community, private, and governmental sectors. This platform enabled the implementation of actions aimed at forest landscape restoration and water resource management, in response to water scarcity during the dry season that affected both river flow and local communities. Among the main achievements were the restoration of 245.16 hectares of riparian forest and the implementation of a flow monitoring system. The purpose of this study was to systematize the experiences of riparian forest restoration and water resource management in the region through the description of silvicultural techniques and practices, the estimation of financial resources and required investment, and the identification of management and coordination processes to strengthen water governance. For this purpose, a methodology was applied that integrated guidelines from FAO and INAB, along with a financial and governance analysis.
