Abstract

ABSTRACT MANAGEMENT OF SOLID WASTE AND WASTE GENERATED IN ZONE 2 OF THE MUNICIPALITY OF CHIMALTENANGO. The municipality of Chimaltenango is located 54 kilometers from the capital city, it is crossed by the Interamerican Highway CA-1. It borders the following municipalities of the department of Chimaltenango: to the North with San Martín Jilotepeque, to the South with San Andrés Itzapa and Parramos; to the East with San Juan Sacatepéquez, Guatemala and to the West with the San Juan Comalapa and Zaragoza municipalities, Chimaltenango. According to projections of the INE for 2017 has a total of 171,254 inhabitants and is distributed in nine areas, in this investigation was taken only zone 2, because it is one of the largest and it is located in the municipal market. The objective of the research was to evaluate the waste and solid waste management generated in zone 2 of the municipality of Chimaltenango, taking into account the following sectors: public roads, homes, municipal market and shops. During the development of the same methodologies were used such as: interviews, tours of the area; having as sample size in homes 242 and 74 in shops. For the calculation of the indicators, waste and solid waste generated during a week were weighed and classified as organic, inorganic, recoverable and non-recoverable inorganic. In the end, an environmental education plan was proposed as a solution measure to the problem studied. Currently in zone 2 there are two solid waste collection services, one provided by the municipality, which includes public roads, municipal market and Los Aposentos National Park; while the private service called ASEBACH (Association of Garbage Collectors in Chimaltenango), provides the service at the household level.
